Job Summary:

The Saw Filer/Fitter position is responsible for saw filing activities on bandsaws and circular saw blades. The position reports directly to the Saw Shop Supervisor and keeps up daily filing task to include but not limited to brazing or welding cracks in saw blades, removing and installing new blade tips, blade benching and grinding. The position will be directly involved with the maintenance and repair of saws and collaborates with the maintenance on machine upkeep in the sawmill. Extensive sawmill experience is called upon for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the plant. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Repairs bandsaw and circular saw blades according to required specifications, using hand tools, machine tools, and welding equipment.
  • Brazes or welds cracks in saw blades.
  • Performs all aspects of saw blade sharpening, removal and brazing on new saw tips, benching and repair at the direction of the Lead Saw Shop Filer/Fitter.
  • Maintains saw filing equipment and maintaining an organized filing room.
  • Ensures proper machine alignment to produce specified cut.
  • Performs preventive maintenance procedures, including the ability to inspect equipment for signs of wear/damage and recognize unsafe conditions at the direction of the lead filer.
  • Collaborates with management and maintenance for scheduling for service work.
  • Communicates with management as to quality control issues.
  • Other duties as assigned by Lead Saw Shop Filer/Fitter.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ saw filing experience in a sawmill environment preferred.
  • Experience in fitting round and band saws, tensioning and leveling round saws / band saws, and welding.

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
