Job Summary:
The Forester position is responsible to coordinate and manage the procurement of high quality and cost-effective timber to ensure a constant flow of logs into the sawmill. This includes evaluating forest land by interacting and building rapport with a variety of forest landowners.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Procure high-quality timber in a wide variety of wood species.
- Effectively and professionally interact and build relationships with private landowners, federal, state and local agencies.
- Ensure all agreements, contracts, and internal documents are properly prepared, signed, distributed, and filed.
- Oversight of logging and road building contractors.
- Maintain close communication with sawmill management to determine log volume requirements.
- Ensure log deliveries match mill consumption and size requirements while maintaining maximum cost efficiency.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Forestry or related field with three years of experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience (five years).
- Willingness to abide by established safety standards.
- Team building, communication, analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in use of personal computers and related software applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Ability to develop, prioritize, plan, implement and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines with occasional extended work periods and weekend work.
- Willing to work independently in an office setting and travel to destinations in the woods. Minimum of 50% of work time is spent in the field, working on steep or broke ground covered with slash and brush, and in all weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license is required as work involves driving a vehicle on rough roads

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds and is regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and extreme hot and cold temperatures.
