Job Summary:

 

This position is responsible for the safety, quality, and productivity of the facility, and safely coordinating the maintenance crew to achieve all maintenance needs of the La Grande Sawmill.  This position supervises the operation of the maintenance shop and maintenance employees to ensure quality work is being done. This position reports directly to the Maintenance Manager and interacts with the all other management personnel, leads, and hourly reports as needed to provide an efficient and safe operation. The Maintenance Supervisor leads by proactively resolving safety issues, building teamwork, and ensuring adherence to all applicable policies and procedures. This position has authority to effectively recommend hiring and firing.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Has direct supervision over maintenance employees.
  • Oversees the general operation of the maintenance department with a major focus on compliance with respect to employee safety (lockout procedures, confined space SOP’s, etc.) and environmental rules.
  • Oversees and ensures daily maintenance operations are completed in a satisfactory manner.
  • Attends training sessions to improve leadership abilities and promote positive culture.
  • Ensures employee safety.
  • Ensures environmental compliance.
  • Monitors work for quality and ensures that it is being completed accurately and on time.
  • Achieves maintenance efficiency and minimizes maintenance downtime.
  • Develops work assignments.
  • Approves vacations/leave.
  • Tracks employee time.
  • Conducts coaching/training sessions for direct reports.
  • Takes direct disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Recommends disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Helps to plan and participates in maintenance projects.
  • Has involvement in our CMMS system.

 

Requirements:

 

  • A college degree in business administration, industrial maintenance, or other relevant field is preferred.
  • Three (3) years of prior maintenance experience and proper understanding/knowledge of mill maintenance.
  • Demonstrated project management, planning, implementing, and organizational skills, including reporting.
  • Three (3) years of experience leading engaged teams & workforces.
  • Three (3) years of leadership/supervisory experience in a related job function.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with people and facilitiate change and growth in a team environment.
  • Ability to participate in and facilitate group meetings.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of the organization.
  • Professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Outlook.
  • Detail oriented with a strong focus on work accuracy.
  • Ability to think critically and see the big picture of the operation.
  • Must be able and willing to work safely and promote safe work practices.

 

Physical Demands:

 

While this is a supervisory role, the physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
