Job Summary:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the environmental permits/projects for all Lumber and Millwork Division facilities. The position is responsible for working with the facilities to ensure compliance with the current environmental permits, collecting data, developing reports and liaising with the Department of Environmental Quality to ensure continuing operations. This individualwill also work directly with the Division Environmental Health and Safety Manager to provide consistent implementation of the safety plan and provide support for the plant safety coordinators. The EHS Specialist will work in partnership with leaders to implement best practices and monitor compliance with environmental and safety requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
SAFETY
- Work with the Division EHS Manager to provide consistent implementation of the Division safety plan
- Coordinate and schedule monthly safety meetings
- Work with safety coordinators and plant managers to develop the safety culture
- Provide recommendations for improving safety in the workplace
- Assist in evaluation of accidents that occur and identify possible root causes
- Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents and related events
- Audit safety programs, processes and procedures
- Attend and occasionally present at monthly Woodgrain Safety Council Meetings
- Assist in organizing and coordinating semi-annual Woodgrain Safety Week
- Update and maintain Community Right to Know Reports
- Assist in the implementation of the company SMS
ENVIRONMENTAL
- Update, implement, and periodically review an organizational environmental plan (e.g., obtain, update, and maintain OM&M plans, permits, and standard operating procedures (SOP))
- Maintain compliance with current air and water permits
- Prepare, review, and update environmental reports for Responsible Official and submit to DEQ and EPA
- Utilize DEQ and EPA websites to submit regulatory documents
- Conduction investigations for all deviation reports and evaluate corrective actions
- Attend and liaise with DEQ officials for all inspections and permit audits
- Analyze scientific data and do quality-control checks
- Monitor progress of environmental improvement programs
- Inspect facilities and programs to ensure organizational compliance with environmental regulations
- Educate personnel regarding environmental compliance
- Environmental data collection and compilation
- Manage Environmental Consultant projects
- Manage the SDS management system for the division by reviewing all new chemical request forms
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
- 2+ years of experience preferably in manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of safety principles and OSHA requirements.
- Regulatory reading and comprehension.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and efficiently.
- Interpersonal and communication skills; including effective writing and presentation skills
- Ability to solve problems using critical thinking.
- Ability to complete work with an understanding of larger objectives in mind.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical office environment; however, this person is expected to also be on the manufacturing floor/environment for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must be able to lift or move up to 25 pounds. This is a full-time position.
Travel:
This position occasionally requires long hours, travel, and occasional weekend work.
