Job Summary:
The Production Manager is responsible for the safety, quality and productivity of the mill. This position manages the daily activities of mill employees, including the production supervisors and hourly employees, to achieve the company’s goals and objectives. This position is also responsible for assisting sales and the Plant Manger to ensure that the facility meets expectations for production scheduling, inventory control, operating rate and facility financial performance. The Production Manager leads by proactively resolving employee issues, building teamwork, and ensuring adherence to all applicable policies and procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide safe, effective, positive leadership to motivate a team of salary and hourly production employees.
- Provide leadership, knowledge, and direction to ensure production and operational targets are met.
- Maintain a clean, safe and well-organized mill.
- Multi-task while dealing with multiple, competing priorities.
- Directly supervise department employees in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
- Coach employees for attainment of company and individual goals and objectives.
- Work closely with the plant manager to provide support, leadership and technical knowledge to maintain quality as well as volume and grade recoveries.
- Demonstrate business acumen to meet annual financial objectives.
- Lead a culture of continuous improvement and be a champion of activities, programs and events to drive continuous improvement efforts throughout the plant.
- Work closely with the maintenance superintendent to maximize safety and quality while meeting productivity goals.
- Work with the Human Resource Department to facilitate the recruiting, interviewing, hiring and termination of employees.
- Perform performance reviews, employee relations activities, and corrective action in conjunction with Human Resources in a timely and effective manner.
- Present information in written and oral form to a variety of audiences including: warehouse associates, team leaders, maintenance technicians, operations and departmental managers, and corporate organizational leaders.
- Manage timekeeping procedures to assure all employees are recording time accurately.
- Plan, direct and coordinate the manufacturing process in compliance with company goals and objectives
- Ability to analyze safety, maintenance, quality and productivity issues and take corrective measures.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of lumber/logs within the departments.
- Ensure regulatory compliance for the plant, including operating within environmental permits, OSHA guidelines, insurance requirements and company policy.
- Participate and provide leadership in problem solving and corrective action processes.
- Promptly and accurately complete all recordkeeping assignments.
- Lead by example and personal conduct in all safety areas and provide effective safety leadership for the sawmill departments.
- Actively ensure training and development of assigned personnel to maximize safety, quality and productivity across the production departments.
Requirements:
Education / Experience / Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Previous experience as a Production Supervisor, Production Manager, or related experience required.
- Experience in analyzing production data to eliminate waste and foster continuous improvement.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical office environment, though this person is expected to occasionally be on and work in the manufacturing floor/environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. This is a full-time position. This position may require long hours and occasional weekend work.
