Employment Type: Hourly FT - Swing shift

Job Summary: The Planerman is responsible for safely sharpening and maintaining planer cutting tools and knives used to surface rough sawn lumber to meet final product specifications. This position also performs light maintenance on the entire planing line.  This operator is critical to maintaining safety, quality, and production goals. Experience in a lumber planing environment is required for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the equipment.  All Woodgrain employees will be expected to exemplify our core values and put Safety Above All.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Safely sets up and operates grinding machines to shape and sharpen planer knives woodworking machine cutters according to specifications.
  • Positions secures workpiece or sheet stock, template and machine accessories onto machine, using handtools.
  • Turns handwheels to set travel pressure of cutterhead or knife stock across or against grinding wheel to shape or sharpen workpiece.
  • Balance knives as required.
  • Starts machine, observes grinding operation to verify conformance to specifications.
  • May cut out plastic templates used to fabricate knives cutterheads.
  • Selects and installs grinding wheels on machine, using handtools, applying knowledge of product specifications abrasives.
  • Performs preventive and other light maintenance on planer and supporting equipment.
  • Reports and schedules quality, maintenance and other issues to planer coordinator.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a planer operation.
  • Mechanical aptitude.

  • Basic computer skills.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Handles razor sharp cutting tools. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
